Building Fatigue Resistance: Why Races Are Decided in the Last Quarter
Most marathons aren't lost in the first 20 miles. They're lost in the last six, when the pace you trained for suddenly feels impossible to hold. The runners who don't fall apart there aren't just fitter, they've specifically trained their fatigue resistance, and that's a trainable quality, not just a matter of toughness.
What fatigue resistance actually means
It's the ability to hold your goal pace even as fatigue builds, rather than your pace and your effort both climbing at the same time in the final miles. Two runners can have near-identical fitness on paper and still have completely different experiences of the last 10K of a marathon, because one of them specifically trained to resist the slide and the other didn't.
The funnel effect
The way this gets built is through what shows up in training as a "funnel effect" around your goal marathon pace. Midweek sessions run at threshold or half-marathon effort, slightly faster than marathon pace, while your long runs progress from a pace noticeably slower than marathon pace down toward marathon pace itself over several weeks. Both directions squeeze in toward the same target from either side, so your body gets specifically comfortable at exactly the effort it needs to hold on race day, rather than only ever training either much easier or much harder than that.
The progressive long run
Rather than running every long run at the same pace, the long run itself gradually shifts over the weeks leading into a marathon: starting around 20 seconds per mile slower than goal pace, and tightening down toward goal pace itself by the final long runs before taper. This does two things at once: it builds the aerobic durability of a long run, and it rehearses the specific feeling of holding marathon effort while genuinely tired, which is the exact skill race day demands.
Where the 80/20 principle fits in
None of this works if the other 80% of your training isn't genuinely easy. Fatigue resistance isn't built by making everything hard, it's built by making the hard sessions count because the easy days actually let you absorb them. Lactate itself is part of this story too, it isn't simply a waste product to avoid, it's a fuel your body can use, and training that respects both the easy/hard split and how your body actually processes effort is what makes the harder sessions produce real adaptation instead of just accumulated fatigue.
The takeaway
Race day doesn't reward whoever trained hardest, it rewards whoever trained to hold their pace when it stops feeling easy. That's what fatigue resistance training is actually for, and why it deserves a deliberate place in marathon preparation rather than being left to hope and willpower on race day itself.
